With the previous virtual exhibition "Name, Rank, Serial Number!" we showcased military identification documents (ID). As a sequel to that exhibition we are presenting a new virtual exhibition “Your Documents, Please!”. IDs are separated into membership cards, small cards, passes, index’s and other documents with personal information.
The exhibition is divided into thematic segments covering different documents or institutions which made them. Thus, we showcase:
I. Documents of state institutions, political parties and socio-political organizations,
II. Documents of educational institutions
III. Documents of societies, associations and affiliations (sports, cultural, educational etc.) and
IV. Documents of state institutions and public service
The objects cover a broad historical period from the 19th to the 20th century. Precisely through these objects we can see different state-governing institutions that Croatia was a part of as well as social and political processes in the nation’s development, geopolitical processes, migration, state-governing institutions, and the most interesting of all – information that was in particular periods considered viable for identification.
At the same time, the documents are a source of an organized society and state governance, but on the other hand a testament of a big state apparatus, or rather administration and the cost of issuing documents with which the state today collects revenue.
Many people collected and kept safe different IDs, proudly carried and some even hid for different reasons. While identifying a person it is accustomed to hear the instruction "Your documents, please!" which is why this virtual exhibition is called that way. In that spirit, look inside a diverse history of Croatian society and maybe you will remember some of the documents that belonged to you or your dear ones!
